Tropical Mocktail – The Perfect Summer Drink

I live in Los Angeles, the land of beautiful weather, clear skies and palm trees.  It’s a city that celebrates summer all year long!  A Summer mocktail will bring a little bit of  bliss to you all year long!

One of my favorite things about cocktails is that they have so much flavor, and always feel like such a treat.

I wanted to create a recipe for a mocktail to share with you on a day you’re not feeling like a boozy drink.

Ingredients for the Tropical Mocktail Recipe

One of the best things about this tropical mocktail recipe is that all of the ingredients (other than the sparkling water) are fresh, and all probably things you have on hand!

I grabbed this Dasani Sparkling Water from Target but they also sell it on amazon.  Then I made a quick trip to the farmers market to get the fresh fruit for this mocktail.

If you have a farmer’s market near you I’d recommend going there instead of the grocery store.  Using fresh, quality, ingredients is the way to go with this recipe because there are so few ingredients.  All of their flavors really stand out.

There were so many different fruit in season when I went to the farmer’s market, but I wanted to keep this mocktail tropical, so I decided to pick up oranges, raspberries and strawberries for the recipe.

I knew the flavors in the berries and citrus would be great additions to the Dasani Sparkling Tropical Pineapple Water I picked up earlier.

When I found the oranges, they were the sweetest, juiciest oranges I’d ever had!  I tried an orange slice from every booth that sold oranges (not even kidding).  Even though I tried all of the oranges I ended up coming back to the first one I tried from Burkart Organics.

I told the farmer how wonderful, juicy and sweet his oranges were and he explained why.  He said his orange trees were planted over fifty years ago, and while you can harvest oranges from younger trees, the older trees yield sweeter, juicer oranges.

With a bag full of fresh produce, I headed home to create my (now favorite) summer mocktail recipe.

Ingredients for the Tropical Mocktail

Mixed fruit ice cubes in plastic trays.

Tools needed to make this Non Alcoholic Cocktail

  • A Lemon-Lime Squeezer
  • A Cocktail Shaker
  • A Muddler
  • Ice Cube Trays (optional)

A tray of raspberry and strawberry fruit ice cubes.

Tropical Fruit Ice Cubes

Now if you just read the ingredients you’re probably wondering what these optional “fruit ice cubes” are.  These, my friend, are super cute edible decorations.  And while they need multiple hours to set, they’re definitely worth the wait!

They’re super easy to prep!  First, you wash your extra fruit.  Then cut the extra strawberries and oranges into small pieces (the raspberries don’t need to but cut, because they’re small enough).  Then you put one piece in each slot in the ice cube trays.

I did this right before I went to bed and they were ready the next day.

The fruit ice cubes are optional because they’re the only part of the recipe that takes a long time.  The rest is really quick to put together.

If you have the time to make them, they’re a really nice addition to this and any other non alcoholic cocktail.  Check out my full fruit ice cube tutorial!

Making the Tropical Mocktails

Alright, now that you’ve got all your ingredients together, lets start making this Summer Mocktail!  The recipe only takes a few minutes to assemble.

Two pink mocktails with fruit ice cubes on a table with fruit.

Prep your Drink Glasses

The first thing you should do is prep your drink glasses.  This is a bartender’s trick that I am so excited to share with you.  Take the glasses you want your drinks to be in, and fill them with ice and cold water.

This will start cool down the glasses and get them ready for the drinks.  Doing this will chill your glasses which will allow your drinks to stay cold longer.  These drinks are so great you’ll want them to stay cold so you can enjoy them as long as possible!

Combine your Tropical Mocktail Fruit Mix Ingredients

Take your cocktail shaker and drop in the raspberries and strawberries.  Take your muddler and muddle these until they’re really fine (a couple of minutes).

Next, juice the two oranges into the cocktail shaker and add the Tropical Pineapple Dasani Sparkling Water.

Take a long spoon (or your muddler if you don’t have a cocktail spoon) and gently stir the ingredients together.  DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT SHAKE THEM.

Since the Dasani Sparkling Water is carbonated it will spray everywhere, no matter how good the seal is on your cocktail shaker.  Trust me, a nice blouse and I found this out the hard way…

Pour your Tropical Mocktails

Now you can dump the ice and water you used for prepping the glasses.  Put in your fruit ice cubes (if using) and strain the mixture in the cocktail shaker into the glass over the ice.

I had to strain it twice, once through the cocktail shaker, and another time through a sieve to have the drinks be completely clear.  If you muddle the strawberries and raspberries well, you’ll have to do this too.

If you don’t mind having your drinks a little “dirty” aka with some of the fruit in it, don’t worry about double straining them.  However, I think they’re really pretty if they’re clear, so I opted to double strain them.

That’s it – now your non alcoholic cocktail is complete!  This recipe will yield two tropical mocktails, so you can share with a friend…or have a second one yourself!

Two glasses of low calorie tropical mocktails on a table next to oranges and strawberries.

Low Calorie Summer Mocktail

One reason I normally don’t like tropical mocktail recipes is because they’re normally loaded with sugar.  I prefer a naturally sweetened drink – it’s healthier and I love the taste of fresh fruit.

If you follow this recipe and use fresh fruits instead of processed fruit juices, you’ll keep the calorie count on this drink low (while still keeping all of the delicious flavor)!

I’ll leave you with a tip for transforming any mocktail recipes into a low calorie mocktail recipes (or at least lower calorie mocktail recipes).  Any time a mocktail recipe asks for fruit juice, opt for freshly squeezed fruit juice instead of processed juice.
