Skillet Pizza Bread – Easy Pull Apart Side Dish or Appetizer

Now is the time, guys.  It’s the perfect time for pull-apart skillet pizza bread!  Let me just tell you, this is one you’re going to want to make right now, and over and over and over again.

This recipe is my new favorite dinner…or lunch… heck who am I kidding, I’m sure breakfast skillet pizza bread would be amazing too.  Any time is pizza time!

ingredients for pizza bread

One of the best things about this skillet pizza bread is how easy it is to make.  I mean, pizza shouldn’t be difficult, right?  You only need five ingredients (and two tools) to make this.

  •  1 Package of Pepperoni, Sliced
  •  1 Package of Store Bought Pizza Dough
  •  1 Log of Mozzarella, Cut Into Chunks and Shredded
  •  1 Cup of Pizza Sauce
  •  1 Handful of Fresh Herbs
  •  1 Cast Iron Skillet
  •  1 Cast Iron Skillet Handle

Let’s talk about cast iron skillets for a minute.  Have you ever used one?  Because I just started using one recently and I’m ADDICTED.  Before I started using them I just figured they would be the same as frying pans, because the look the same – right?  My friends, I was very wrong.

While cast iron skillets may look like a frying pan, they cook nothing like a frying pan.  I’ve never made anything in a frying pan that was as evenly cooked as when it comes from a skillet.  Plus, you can throw them in the oven without worrying about damaging them (which is what you will do with this recipe)!

The drawbacks to skillets?  These babies are heavy…but this doesn’t both me much, because when you’re cooking how much are you honestly picking up the pan and moving it around?  Another drawback is how HOT the handle gets, and how easily I forget that fact.

I hate nothing more than getting out dish towels or potholders to move hot dishes because they get hot so quickly and they’re so hard to use.  Having this skillet handle cover has really saved the day.  It fits right over the handle and can withstand the heat!  No more burnt hands for me! ?

Seriously, if you don’t have a cast iron skillet and handle cover, make that your next kitchen related purchase.  Once you start using it you’ll thank yourself!  OK, now that you know the tools you need, let’s talk about how to make this skillet pizza bread happen.

First you will need to make little pizza bites – which I’ve shown in photos above for those of you visual learners out there!  Below is how you make them in a step by step tutorial. Also, preheat your oven to 400 º before you start this step and you’ll be ready to go by the time you’re done!

dough in a blue bowl

Take a pice of your pizza dough and spread it out to be about the size of your palm.  I actually did this in my hand, because the dough sort of stuck to my hand, and it was easier to shape.

pizza sauce on dough

Then, with a spoon, put a dollop of pizza sauce in the center of the dough.  The more you can keep it in the center, the better!  It gets a little messy if it’s too close to the edges.

pepperoni on dough

Put a slice of pepperoni on top of the pizza sauce.

Add a little chunk of mozzarella cheese.

Top with another slice of pepperoni.

Then fold the dough over so you make little balls with it.  I continued to do this until all the dough was used!  It can be a little tricky for the first couple, but once you get the hang of it, it’s really fun!

Just remember that the dough sticks to itself.  You can use that to your advantage in getting the balls to form!

Once you have all your little pizza bites in the skillet put some pepperoni between each ball.  This helps stop your pizza bites from completely sticking together and makes them easier to get out when you’re ready to eat them.  Plus, more pepperoni, obviously.

fresh herbs

Then take your fresh herbs and chop them finely.  I used basil, thyme and oregano, because I like those flavors with pizza!  Use a generous amount!

Sprinkle the herbs on top!  Honestly guys, you can go crazy with these – the more herbs the better!  They add such great flavor!

Grate more of that delicious mozzarella log on top of your skillet pizza bread.  Now you’re ready to put it in the oven!  Your oven should be preheated by now, so just pop in the skillet (without the handle cover) in for 25-30 minutes.

baked skillet pizza dough

When your ready to take your skillet out, be careful because it will be heavy.  Grab you silicone skillet cover a remove the skillet from the oven.  Be careful, the part not covered by the handle cover will be HOT.  It’s been in the oven for 30 minutes!

Making skillet pizza dough

That’s it!  It’s super easy to make.  Take the remainder of your pizza sauce and serve as a dipping sauce.  Be careful when you’re taking the pizza balls out of the skillet!  I used a fork and I was fine.
