Kale, spinach, pear, banana and celery green smoothie

Kale spinach pear banana celery smoothie on eatlivetravelwrite.com Ah… summer – it’s finally here. And with that, a different way of eating – lighter meals, more fruits and vegetables. Though I’ve been pretty good about incorporating fruits and veggies into my diet over the colder months, thanks to the KitchenAid Torrent Blender, I’m excited for the warmer months when there’s more variety to choose from and I can’t wait to introduce my Torrent to some new produce!

KitchenAid Torrent Blender on eatlivetravelwrite.comon eatlivetravelwrite.com I’ve been a fan of the Torrent since I received it last summer because it’s powerful, fast, it takes the guess work out of timing (it has four pre-programmed, hands-free settings – juice, soups/sauces, milkshakes, icy drinks/ smoothies), you can add ingredients as you blend, it’s dishwasher-friendly (if you have one…) and both the jug and the ingredient cap are BPA-free.  There are a few cons (you can read my full review here) but  I am, on the whole, a huge fan and so happy to finally have a super-powerful blender that can handle tough jobs.  At MSRP $599.99CAD it’s not cheap but I’ve found with small appliances you get what you pay for. This is definitely a worthwhile investment.

I was thrilled to introduce the Torrent to the families at my Food Revolution parent-child cooking class recently (stay tuned for more details about that coming this week! – suffice to say that the smoothie bar was one of the most popular features of the night!

Making smoothies with the Torrent Blender on eatlivetravelwrite.com Smoothies at Food Revolution Toronto cooking class on eatlivetravelwrite.com Though I’ve been impressed with the Torrent for its ability to purée soups beautifully over the cooler months, probably my favourite use of the Torrent is for smoothies. I love that it manages hard, raw fruits and veggies with ease (as long as you have a little bit of liquid in the bottom underneath your solids).  This way I’m getting the “whole fruit” (and all the fibre that goes along with it!) and I end up with a smoothie/ juice that it a little more substantial (I might add some nut butter or yoghurt for more protein if I’m hungrier).  The fact that it come with four pre-programmed, hands-free settings means I am able to make my smoothie (or whatever I am making) without constantly monitoring it because the blender automatically shuts off and makes a lovely ringing tone to let you know it’s ready. The Torrent helps me deal with lots of odds and ends of produce (even when you think they might be on their last legs, smoothies and soups are always the answer!) and more often than not, at least once a week I’ll end up with a green smoothie.
