About Mint Chocolate Chip Dip

Peppermint is one of those ultra-refreshing flavors, and when paired with sweetened cream cheese and chocolate chips, it becomes the best refreshingly satisfying dessert.

And that, my friends, is what this mint chocolate chip dip is: a big bowl of mint cheesecake filling and lots of chocolate chips.

Plus, this dip is the perfect way to get your mint and chocolate fix without all the fuss! It only takes 15 minutes to make and serve.

How long can you leave out a dessert dip?

Whenever you serve a dip for your guests to enjoy, you should always keep track of how long it sits at room temperature.

For most foods, the general rule of thumb is that a perishable item should not be in the “danger zone” for more than two hours. And by “danger zone,” this is usually at or just above room temperature, which is how this dip will be served.

As the party goes on, you can move your dip back to the refrigerator once you get past the two-hour mark. If your guests still want more dip, let it chill for at least 30 minutes before bringing it back out again.

Want to dig deeper into food safety? Take a look at the USDA’s Food Safety Basics, especially the part about the above-mentioned “danger zone.”

Tricks for perfectly whipping cream

Since I posted this recipe, readers have commented that they’ve had trouble getting the heavy whipping cream to whip properly.

For this recipe to work, the whipped cream should be thick. The recipe states that the cream should form stiff peaks, and that is just what it sounds like: when you remove the mixer blades, the cream should keep its shape and look like peaked mountains.

To help ensure this happens, try these tips:

  • Use high-quality turning cream that’s extremely fresh (just purchased, just opened).
  • Chill the heavy turning cream in the {refrigerator|fridge|deep freeze} 15 minutes before use. Use the cream {the moment|when} it’s removed from the fridge.
  • If you’re using any metal, porcelain, or glass attachments for mixing up this dip (bowl, whisk, etc) try freezing them beforehand.

What to serve with dessert dip?

I like to double up on the mint experience by serving this dip with mint Oreo cookies, but there are plenty of other options that go well with mint.

Below are some of my best suggestions. Feel free to try one (or as many) as you like!

  • Nilla Wafers
  • Pretzels
  • Sugar Cookies
  • Graham Crackers
  • Cubes of pound cake
  • Ladyfinger cookies
  • Crumbled waffle cones
  • Fruit

Can you make this dip in advance?

Certainly! However, I would recommend not mixing in the chocolate chips until ready to serve. This will keep any of the chocolate from “bleeding” into the rest of the dip, potentially changing the color and impacting the separation of flavors.

Once prepared, this dip can be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before serving. When ready to serve, let the dip soften on the counter for 30 minutes, mix in the chocolate chips, then serve.

Can you freeze mint cheesecake dip?

Yes, you totally can! The consistency may change a little once thawed, but not so much that you can’t still enjoy the dip. The flavor will not change.

Once prepared, store in a sealed container or freezer bag in the freezer for up to one month.

Notes & tips for this mint chocolate chip dip

  • For this recipe, I highly recommend using a stand mixer or a hand mixer. This isn’t a recipe you can make by hand with a whisk.
  • Depending on how well your cream whips, this recipe could make just enough for a big serving bowl or maybe enough for two serving bowls. If you have extra, the dip can be stored in the fridge in a sealed container (up to 2 -3 days) and used for any sort of sweet topping (or just more dip!)

How to make mint cheesecake dip

This next part is only a photo tutorial of the recipe steps. If you’re looking for the full recipe measurements and instructions, scroll down to Recipe Details.

Step 1 – Using a stand mixer (or a hand mixer + large bowl), pour in peppermint extract, vanilla extract, heavy whipping cream, and powdered sugar. Set mixer speed to high and whip the cream until stiff peaks form, usually about 5-7 minutes. If you’re having trouble getting the cream to thicken, check the section above about tips for whipping cream.

Step 2 – Remove the whipped cream from the mixer, then add the cream cheese. Whip until smooth and creamy.

Step 3 – Gently mix the whipped peppermint cream and the cream cheese together with a spatula. If you’d like the dip to be green, add some green food coloring, a few drops at a time, and mix until the desired color is reached.

Step 4 – Add mini chocolate chips, then gently mix with the spatula.

Step 5 – Serve the dip immediately with cookies for dipping and enjoy!

I am making this for a party tomorrow night. Any tricks or tips on preserving it?

    very good all the recipes

Can an electric hand mixer be used instead of a stand up mixer? I really want to make this for a get together this weekend.

    • Christine Dryden

I don’t have a stand up mixer, can I use an electric hand mixer?

I always put foods that can become dangerous in two or three different bowls. Refrigerate, then rotate table to refrigerator during event. At a picnic, rotate in and out of cooler.

I LOVED your Chocolate Cookie Dough Dip recipe so I browsed for more! I totally feel your peppermint craving!
BUT I have a question: If I don’t have heavy whipping cream, could I just add a 1/2 cup of Butter in it’s place? Or use regular whipped cream? What would you suggest? I feel like the cream cheese makes it thick enough to dip anyways, so I figured the butter would work?

Did you color the dip with green food coloring?

      • Chrisy

Hey Megan! Yes, a few drops of green food coloring are used, but looks like I forgot to notate in that in the ingredients. Adding it now! Thanks for letting me know 😀
