Watermelon and Feta Salad

April 18, 2017 (Last Updated: January 25, 2020) by Chris Collins

Watermelon and Feta Salad with a Lime/Olive Oil dressing and fresh blasts of Mint. An incredibly flavoursome and beautifully simple way to serve a watermelon salad.

Admittedly when I first found out watermelon and feta was a thing, I was a tad confused. But in all honesty after trying it out I’ve completely fallen in love. Here’s my take on the infamous watermelon and feta salad! Cubed of course, just because I’m extra. Follow me…

Watermelon and Feta Salad cubes with mint and fork

Watermelon and Feta Salad

The sweetness from the watermelon in this dish compliments the salty and tangy flavours from the feta so beautifully. This, with a punch of citrus from the lime and the silky textures of the oil brings something quite heavenly to the table.

Watermelon Feta Salad with Mint

When you add mint to the table, you’ve got a whole different thing going on. The mint, and just a little bit of it, will add a gorgeous fresh blast to the salad which will balance the sweet, salty and acidic flavours. Fresh mint every time and just 2 large leaves is all you’ll need. You don’t want to overpower the dish.

Cubed Watermelon Salad

Now here’s where things get extra 🤣 You could go for the standard watermelon chunks and crumbled feta, but how darn cute are the watermelon feta salad squares!? I usually make this salad as a starter, so it’s nice to serve it a little funky. To start, all you need to do is slice a disk in the watermelon the same width as a block of feta.

How to slice a watermelon in cubes

Top Tip #1 – Use a nice firm Greek Feta (as opposed to something like Danish) so it doesn’t go mushy as you slice. Greek Feta is also fairly salty and tangy, which works as a great contrast to the sweet watermelon.

How to cube a Watermelon Feta Salad (quick summary)

  1. Lay your watermelon disk on a chopping board.
  2. Place a block of feta on top.
  3. Slice a 3×3 grid.
  4. Carefully remove outer disk.
  5. Place in a checkered pattern on a plate.

Watermelon and Feta Salad Toppings

When it comes to what to serve with this salad, I usually add a dressing of lime juice and extra virgin olive oil, just to keep it simple. However, if you’re looking for an extra little ‘something’, here’s some optional toppings I have personally added and loved:

  • Crushed Pistachios
  • Diced Cucumber
  • Thinly Sliced Red Onion

Leftover watermelon? Not a problem!

Quick 1 min demo!

Notes:

a) Optional Extras - For an extra crunch some crushed pistachios work fab with this recipe. I've also tried this with very finely sliced red onion and diced cucumber, both of which taste great.
b) Subs - If you want to sub the mint I'd go for fresh basil (I have tried this before, works nicely but does offer a significantly different taste to the mint). You can also the lime juice for lemon juice.
c) Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Firstly just make sure it's extra virgin, not regular. Secondly I recommend going for a good quality brand. The flavour combo of watermelon and feta is so scrummy, don't skimp out on the oil and spoil it.
d) Feta - Use a nice firm Greek Feta so it doesn't go mushy as you try and cube/slice it.
e) Non-cubed - You can of course use the recipe without cubing the feta and watermelon. I recommend still chopping the watermelon to small chunks and just crumbling in the feta.
f) Leftover Watermelon - Here's a few more watermelon salad ideas you can make with your leftover watermelon: Grilled Watermelon Salad, Watermelon and Mozzarella Salad, Watermelon Basket.
g) Calories - Based on using 2 tsp lime juice and 2 tsp extra virgin olive oil.

I am from the Middle East, so I sometimes feel like I am physically incapable of eating watermelon without feta. But your presentation is so much prettier than anything I’ve normally done!

I agree, much as watermelon and feta sound strange they really work so well together, especially with mint and citrus.

Great recipe. Watermelon and Feta makes a tasty combination. I’ve made a similar salad with shrimp in it. I was as shocked as you at how well the flavors worker together.
