Showing Up for Yourself + Plant Based Mango Lassi (no refined sugar)

whole_food_plant_based_mango_lassi-8

I love Malaysia for reasons I don’t fully understand.

It’s uncomfortably hot, humid, and chaotic.

It smells like fish and meat most places you go.

There are social functions and dinners at every turn, and my introverted self has to suck it up, reach for my big girl trousers, and show up with a smile and things to say.

Traffic is horrible and every time I get in the backseat of a Grab (Southeast Asia’s version of Lyft/Uber), I put an energetic shield of protective light around us.

Speed limits are not enforced, the lines on the road are merely suggestions that are often ignored, and cars drive so close to one another (front, back and side) that it’s like being in a real life game of bumper cars.

We were driving yesterday and I shit you not, motorbikes were driving in the opposite direction of traffic. Yes, the motorbikes were coming toward us. On purpose.

In all of its hectic, smelly, hot, body clenching, humidity, there is a deep rooted charm that I just can’t shake. It’s kind of like a recipe that calls for a lot of strange ingredients and you’re sure it’s not going to taste good, but when you put it in your mouth you can’t help but close your eyes and swoon into it. The openness and hospitality of the people, the diversity of cultures, the food, the smiles, the laughter, the combination of old and new – I love it in my bones, and I am so happy to be here.

I won’t give you the details because they are not my details to share, but Luanne’s dad is doing as well as he possibly can for someone with late stage pancreatic cancer. I’ve introduced him to the world of green smoothies which has been a game changer for him. Being able to drink nutrients is such a blessing when you have a hard time eating.

He had been drinking Ensure when we got here, and he would get sick every time he drank it. I did a little switcharoo, and now he’s drinking blended fruits and veggies. He had never had a green smoothie up until now. He asks for them several times a day and enjoys drinking them. I know green smoothies won’t cure him, but they are making him feel a just little better, and right now, that is everything.

This trip has been a difficult one, as we knew it would be, and I am reminded of how easy it is to ignore yourself when you are caring for someone else. That’s why, every morning when I wake up and make my smoothie and get on my yoga mat, I am deeply grateful for my lifestyle and the healthy practices I take with me everywhere I go.

What are some healthy practices that support you when you’re on the go? Talk to me in the comments below!

Update* Luanne’s dad died of pancreatic cancer on August 29th, 2019.

Author: Molly Patrick

Ingredients

  • 2 Medjool dates pits removed and soaked in hot water for 10 minutes
  • 2 cups unsweetened non-dairy milk 475ml
  • 1 ½ cups fresh or frozen mango cubes 250g
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • teaspoon cardamom powder

Instructions

  • Drain the dates from the soaking water and discard the water.
  • Add the dates, along with the rest of the ingredients to your blender and blend until perfectly smooth and creamy.

What grace, feeding Luann’s dad nutrients in the form of delicious smoothies. He must feel so loved! Wish I would have known smoothies fifty years ago to support my own dear dad in his transitional journey.
    Hail Gals Dirty!!!
Ps/ my own recent reset drink (after too much anything bad) is celery, parsley, sliver apple and ginger with a squeeze of lemon or lime. (put it through a strainer to catch the pulp)
    Refreshing delicious and
    straightens you right out !

    Hello Molly and Luanne,
Firstly, I just wanted to send you both, and Luanne’s father, a ton of love and strength. Secondly, I wanted to thank you. I did the free batch last week, and my family are asking me to make your wonderful food again- so I just signed us up. And finally, just as I try to get hold of myself, and allow myself to tackle my feelings about food, movement, weight and my body… the reset comes along. Sign me up!
That was all a bit ‘me, me, me’ … so back to the most important… sending you all love x

    • Molly Patrick on May 11, 2019 at 5:19 pm

We will get you on track in the best possible way.
Thank you for the love and kind words about Luanne’s dad – much appreciated.

First I want to say I’m praying for Luanne and her dad and family. I know it’s a hard road. Second I know how you feel Molly I lived in India for 6 months and have been back several times and it draws me back. The noise, the traffic even the smells envigorates me. Lastly I can’t wait for the reset. Wondering what time Eastern it will start as you know we will stay up all night and day waiting. I need help as we are moving and packing for next Saturday so not eating great and really need to get motivated.

    • Molly Patrick on May 11, 2019 at 5:13 pm

Yup, MaryLou – I’m right there with you!
Thank you for the kind words about Luanne’s dad.
The email with the new reset info will be in your inbox a little after 8 pm your time 🙂
      Happy packing!

Hi, this might be a dumb question, but what is the reset and how is it different than the meal plans? Thanks!

    • Molly Patrick on May 11, 2019 at 5:12 pm

      Not dumb at all!
The new reset is a guided program that involves food and movement.
You will have all the juicy details on Thursday. Be sure to put your name and email in the link in this post.

    • Molly Patrick on May 11, 2019 at 5:10 pm

      Hi Judy,
I’ll be giving you all the details on Thursday, but I can tell you that it is MUCH more than just emails 🙂

  16. Deb on May 11, 2019 at 2:04 pm

I’ve been a part of this dirty tribe since August 2017. When I first began the meal plans, I had no idea what I was doing – or getting myself into. But I followed Molly’s guidance and I ate all the plants and my life started to transform. I started to feel better. I started to see my skin clear up.
Physically, I knew I was doing the best thing for my body by eating this way.
But mentally, that was the hard part. My relationship with food needed some serious couples therapy.
Then along came the 2018 Reset. (queue heavens opening up and angels signing)
I decided to continue trusting Molly and this amazing journey I was on…and I signed up and committed to the program.
It was everything Molly promised…and more.
It was an amazing 30 days and many of the tools I learned in that reset I am still using today.

Needless to say, I am SUPER PUMPED about this years reset!
I am already working with Michelle Andrie and have nothing but the highest praise for her and her work. I have eliminated pains that I thought were with me for life.

I really wasn’t sure how you could make the reset better this year, but it sounds like you found a way!! Can’t wait to start!!

    • Molly Patrick on May 11, 2019 at 5:08 pm

Thank you so much for sharing, Deb!
I absolutely love having you in our community and I can’t wait for you to experience the new Reset!
Your light shines bright, my dear.

  17. Laurel on May 11, 2019 at 5:33 pm

-I’m wondering if I am missing something re: the Reset? I did send in my name and email to the link for info, but so far, still clueless!
-If the reset starts on Thursday, I assume you need to sign up before it starts, but I don’t see where to do that?
-It says you have to sign up within 48 hours of when it’s announced to get a discount. Is that 48 hours from now? And as I have seen others ask – how much is it? a discount from what?
-I’ve only been a meal plan member for a few months, so I have no familiarity with previous resets.
    -Thanks for any thoughts/info!

Much love to Molly and Luanne, and Luanne’s Father and family as they travel this difficult road.

    • Molly Patrick on May 11, 2019 at 5:39 pm

      Hi Laurel,
You have done everything right and you aren’t missing a thing!
The special price will be valid for 48 hours from the time we open our doors, so from Thursday evening to Saturday evening.
Look for our email on Thursday evening and everything will make sense!
Thank you for your kind words.

    Luanne and Molly,

Thank you for all you are doing for us, while being there for Luanne’s father. I’m sure he is finding so much comfort with you both being there with him. And, how wonderful that he is enjoying the goodness of your green smoothies. Prayers and hugs coming from Texas to you all.

Looking forward to the new reset. Change can be good and I’m excited to hear about everything. I follow lots of people working on health and wellness and you two are at the top of the list. I have never recovered from a broken back two years ago. Every time I try to exercise or stretch, it seems to send me back to bed. Having chronic leukemia, too, doesn’t help. 🙂 I know I need to keep pushing to get stronger. Will this be something I can do or modify to my limited strength?

    • JM on May 13, 2019 at 5:53 am

I’d like to know this too. I have a back injury from 20 years ago and when I started “Yoga for back injuries” it angered my back so badly I was in bed for 2 weeks and could hardly move.

      • Michelle on May 14, 2019 at 11:55 am

        JM,

You can move to heal your back. The way we’ve done the movement part of the new reset is in small bite size pieces so you don’t go in and do too much and re-injure yourself.

The new reset is all about getting to know yourself on a deep level. You’ll learn what
your lower back has been trying to get you to pay attention to and you’ll receive tools to give your back what it needs.

Move slow, love on your lower back and it’ll love you back!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

        Hugs,
        Michelle

  24. Lisa on May 12, 2019 at 3:16 am

Molly would love to receive information on the reset. We are coming up on the one year anniversary of our son and his future wife surviving a high doors head on collision car crash. I did the best one can when living at the hospital with the kids so so ready to take care of me. We have more surgery this summer so need to get my butt in gear. Healing thoughts and prayers for you and your family too. Lisa

    • Molly Patrick on May 12, 2019 at 5:31 pm

      Hi LeAnn,
Best to hang tight to your meal plans!

  27. Michelle Andrie on May 12, 2019 at 3:39 pm

    Nancy,

The movement part of the new reset should be great for you back!

I’d advise that you move slowly. Don’t push or force anything. Spend lots of time
in little boat pose, Lie on your back with your knees into your chest. Breathe in and out of your healing back.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I’d love to help your back heal even more!

    Hugs,
    Michelle Andrie
