What Is A Beignet?
Beignets are made famous by Cafe du Monde in New Orleans and originate in France as a French version of a donut.
These thick doughy sweets are normally fried in oil and covered with powdered sugar.
There are a lot of varieties of a beignet. It is very similar to a donut but different in texture and shape.
A beignet is square without a whole and a donut round.
Donuts have more air pockets and are sweeter compared to a beignet.
In Holland, we have our oliebollen which means oil ball dough balls in oil.
If you want to enjoy this treat but do not like the oil, take a look at this recipe.
Normally beignets are made with yeast but we make easy beignets without yeast.
Can Beignets Be Made In An Air Fryer?
Yes, you can make beignets in an Air Fryer. This recipe shows you how easy it is to make beignets without east and air fry them.
The advantage of making it this way is that it takes less time to make in an Air Fryer and you do not need oil so less fat in your beignet.
Air Fryer Beignets Ingredients
To make these beignets you need the following ingredients. Put the following on your grocery shopping list and have them ready when you start:
- Self-rising flour
- Plain Greek Yogurt
- Vanilla extract
- Granulated sugar
- Unsalted butter
- Powdered Sugar
How To Make Air Fryer Beignets
To make this beignet recipe take a big bowl and add the Greek yogurt, vanilla extract, and sugar.
Stir to combine the ingredients. Then add in the self-rising flour and stir it with a wooden spoon until it becomes a dough.
Take a cutting board and flour it before you add the dough to it. Flatten the dough with your hands and fold the dough.
Flatten and fold again. Repeat 3 to 4 times.
Flatten again and shape the dough into a rectangle that is about 1 inch thick.
Cut the rectangle into 9 pieces, dust with flour, and let the dough rest for 10 to 15 minutes.
In the meanwhile, preheat the Air Fryer to 350℉, if you have a grill pan put it inside. It is nonstick and great for cooking your beignets.
Brush the tops of your dough with melted butter. Then place the beignets with the buttered side down in your basket.
Brush the tops of the beignets as well. Close the basket and air fry for 7 so they can turn golden brown.
Turn the beignets and cook for another 6-7 minutes. Take the beignets out of the basket and repeat if you make multiple batches.
Sprinkle the beignets with powdered sugar and serve while still warm.
Why Are My Beignets Flat?
There can be a number of reasons but the most likely reason is the self-rising flour.
If you use old self-rising flour the baking powder in the flour is not working anymore.
So, if you make this recipe use fresh self-rising flour or combine flour and fresh baking powder for the best result.
Can Beignets Be Made Ahead Of Time?
Yes, you can make beignets ahead of time. Even though beignets taste best when made fresh you can make them ahead and serve them later.
Just store them properly and reheat them and you still get delicious beignets.
How To Store Beignets
You have several ways to store beignets. In all cases let the beignets cool completely:
- Room temperature – if you plan on serving the beignets within a day or two you can keep them at room temperature. Put the beignets in an airtight food container to prevent them from going stale
- Freezer – want to keep them longer I recommend you store them in the freezer. Put them in a freezer-friendly food container and store them for up to 3 months
Just like bread, beignets do not store well in the fridge as they go tough so if you want to store your beignets use one of the other options.
Can Beignets Be Served Cold?
Yes, you can serve a beignet cold. Just like a donut, you can eat it cold with some powdered sugar.
However, it is very easy to warm them and they taste even better when they are a little bit warm.
How To Reheat Beignets
Beignets taste best when they are freshly made but if you make a big batch, you are likely not going to eat them all.
When you serve leftover beignets warm them first. You have several ways to reheat your beignets:
- Oven – you can reheat beignets in the oven. Preheat the oven to 350℉. In the meanwhile, put the beignets on a baking sheet. I recommend you sprinkle a few drops of water on the beignets and wrap them in foil. This will revive your beignets instead of brown them. Reheat for 5 minutes or until warm
- Air Fryer – reheating beignets in the Air Fryer is similar to an oven. Preheat the Air Fryer to 325℉ for 3 minutes. Again, sprinkle the leftover beignets with water and wrap them in foil. Reheat the beignets for 3-4 minutes or until warm and serve immediately
- Cast Iron skillet – you can reheat beignets in a cast-iron skillet. Preheat your skillet to medium. You can warm them straight in the pan then warm for a minute on both sides. You can also use a trivet and add a cup of water to your skillet and bring it to a boil. Put your beignets on the trivet and cover the skillet with a lid. Leave it for a minute or so until your beignets are warm
- Microwave – lastly you can heat a beignet in the microwave. Put them in a microwave-safe boil but do not stack the beignets. Cover with plastic wrap or with a wet paper towel. Let your microwave heat the beignets in 30-second bursts and check if the beignets are warm
