Muffulettas are iconic sandwiches from New Orleans, and they are one of the reasons people travel to Louisiana. This sandwich recipe was a creative way for me to connect back to my Louisiana roots.

The oven-baked sliders are bite-sized and perfect for serving as an appetizer or snack. They are also great for game days and gatherings (small or large).

My version of a baked muffuletta is loaded with sliced chicken and turkey deli meats, provolone cheese, Pepper jack cheese, the infamous olive salad spread made from scratch, and Hawaiian rolls, all topped off with butter, garlic, and parmesan sauce. If you love a hot, cheesy sandwich drizzled in butter and garlic, then this is the recipe for you!

Ingredients you will need:

This is a quick and easy recipe to pull together, and aside from the homemade olive salad spread, minimal prep is required.

  • The sliders are made using Hawaiian sweet rolls. I use the 12-count package, but the recipe can always be doubled (or tripled) to create additional sliders.
  • For the deli meats, you need sliced smoked turkey and roasted chicken. Feel free to swap out the meats for your favorites. Any deli meat will work well for this recipe.
  • We cannot forget about the cheese; the provolone and pepper jack cheese slices will go great with this sandwich.
  • The olive salad is a simple combination of pitted green olives, pitted kalamata olives, capers, banana peppers, fresh parsley, and chopped white onions seasoned with black pepper, turmeric, and red pepper flakes. The red wine vinegar and olive oil will keep all these ingredients together and add a bit more flavor to the olive spread.
  • Lastly, we will top the Hawaiian sweet rolls with melted butter, garlic, freshly chopped parsley, and parmesan cheese. This final touch ensures the sliders bake up golden brown.

How to make the baked sliders:

Preheat your oven. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.

Make the olive salad spread. Add the green olives, kalamata olives, capers, onions, banana peppers, red pepper flakes, turmeric, black pepper, and olive oil into a food processor (paid link). Pulse 2-3 times, and do not over-mix; you want the olive salad spread to have a chunky texture. Place the olive mixture into a jar, then pour the red wine vinegar over the olive mix. Place a lid on the jar and place it in the refrigerator until you need it in a later step.

Prepare the rolls. Cut the Hawaiian sweet rolls in half and remove the top, carefully keeping them together. (The Hawaiian sweet rolls are packaged still “attached” at the seams.)

Assemble the sliders. Layer the bottom half of the Hawaiian sweet rolls with provolone cheese, then the olive salad, and the pepper jack cheese. Layer the cheese with the chicken and turkey deli meats before finally topping off with more provolone cheese. Place the top portion of the rolls over the final layer of cheese.

Finish with garlic butter. Add melted butter, parsley, garlic, and grated parmesan cheese to a small bowl. Pour this mixture over the rolls.

Bake. Bake the sliders for 10 minutes at 375 degrees and serve immediately.

And before I forget to mention it — don’t forget to make sure your olives are pitted! (A little side humor from my Guys Grocery Games days, haha.)
