  • Unsweetened vegetable milk
  • The juice of 1 lemon
  • Cold water
  • Cumin powder
  • Sweet paprika powder
  • Salt
  • Black sesame seeds for decoration.

Notes on Ingredients

Chickpeas – Hummus is one of those dishes that you make in the spare of the moment. That`s why I like to have plenty of jars of the best organic brands in my pantry. Cooked organic chickpeas are conserved in salt and water. I use the brand Cal Valls.

Beetroots – I have made this hummus with boiled, baked, and raw beetroot, and to be honest, I prefer using raw beetroot. I like that earthy taste; it blends just as easily as cooked beetroot. It is also more nutritious as it doesn’t lose nutrients by any cooking method. You can always purchase an organ beetroot powder if you don’t have fresh beetroot. I use one I purchased from Amazon. Garlic Cloves – I like to use raw garlic but if it tends to repeat on you, you might benefit from removing the center (garlic germ).

Tahini – An organic paste made from toasted sesame seeds.

Lemon Juice – Fresh lemon juice

Cumin Powder – Organic ground cumin powder.

Sweet Paprika Powder – I love this powder! It gives the hummus a unique taste.

Vegetable milk – I used unsweetened soya milk for this hummus.

Black sesame seeds for decoration – you can purchase them here from Amazon.

Step-by-step instructions

The secret to the smoothest, luxurious hummus is the order in which you add the ingredients to your food processor.

Step 1.

Wash the skin on the beetroot then cut off the top and bottom before peeling the remaining skin.

Step 2.

Add tahini and lemon juice to your food processor, and then turn it on and process for a minute or until you whip up a creamy paste.

Step 3.

Add the chickpeas, followed by the remaining ingredients, the last of all the water, and keep adding little drops either of water or milk until you have reached your desired texture.

Step 4.

Taste and season the hummus with additional salt and pepper. You can top this delicious hummus with salad leaves, microgreens, herbs or spices, berries, nuts, olives, or seeds.

Hummus can be part of a healthy diet and there are plenty of nutrients in hummus with filling fiber, healthy fats, potassium, and a high amount of protein. Hummus can be the perfect savory snack. The main ingredients in hummus are mashed-up chickpeas, a little squirt of virgin olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, salt, tahini (Tahini is a paste made from sesame seed), and spices can also be added to this nourishing creamy dip. Both chickpeas and sesame seeds are extremely nutritious.

What is Tahini?

Tahini is a paste made from ground sesame seeds. It makes the hummus taste incredible!

Where can I buy Tahini?

You can buy tahini at the store or you can make it yourself. If you don’t have tahini, you can try substituting it with peanut butter or almond butter.

Do I have to use raw beetroot?

No, you don`t, you can use boiled or roasted beetroot if that’s what you prefer. I like to use raw beetroot because it’s easy to make and you don’t lose out on any of the nutrients. I like the earthy nutty flavor it provides! The taste of the cooked beetroot is much more milder.

Can you freeze hummus?

Yes, you can freeze hummus easily and safely, and all varieties at that. Let it thaw out completely, and give it a good stir to ensure that the texture is still as creamy. If it isn’t add a drop of water, milk, or oil.

How long can you keep homemade hummus in the fridge?

Your homemade hummus will generally last anywhere from 3-4 days when kept chilled in the fridge.

Can I replace the milk with olive oil?

Yes, but make sure to use virgin olive oil for a healthier option. It will give the hummus a more velvety texture.

Is Beetroot Hummus Healthy?

Beetroot is also known as blood turnips and they contain many essential nutrients. The health benefits of beetroots have been widely researched. Beetroots may lower blood pressure levels, boost energy, and reduce inflammation.

What is hummus?

Hummus is an ancient recipe from the Middle East composed of chickpeas sometimes called garbanzo beans, and tahini a paste similar in texture to peanut butter that is made from sesame seeds.

Ingredients  

  • 300 grams of organic cooked chickpeas
  • 2-3 medium beetroots washed and peeled
  • 1-2 raw garlic cloves
  • 1 table spoons of tahini
  • 1 table spoons of unsweetened vegetable milk
  • The juice of 1 lemon
  • 80 ml of cold water
  • 1/4 tea spoon of cumin powder
  • 1/2 tea spoon of sweet paprika powder
  • Salt for required taste
  • Few black sesame seeds for decoration

Instructions 

  • Place all the ingredients into a food processor and blend until smooth and creamy. if it's too thick, you might gradually add some of the chickpea liquid (aguafaba), 1 table spoons of unsweetened vegetable milk or some water until the desired consistency is reached.
  • .Check for taste, add extra salt, lemon, garlic or tahini, depending on one`s taste.
  • It can be topped with salad leaves, microgreens, fresh herbs, berries, nuts, olives, or seeds.
  • it can be served with a whole range of salad vegetables, crackers and bread and can also be served on toasted bread as in the third picture.
  • It keeps well for up to 4 days in the refrigerator, stored in an airtight container.

If you don`t like Tahini or you can`t find it at a store near you, you can try substituting it with peanut butter, cashew butter or almond butter.
