Star-Shaped Waffles

These little star-shaped waffles are as fun to make as they are to eat! Top them with your favorite syrup, or try the easy-to-make homemade brown-sugar syrup.

Cute and Festive Star-Shaped Waffles

I love to make shaped waffles and pancakes! As a result, I have a growing collection of little Dash waffle makers! Little waffles are cute and festive, but, for me, making waffles comes down to this: It is a way to spend quality time with my family. Children love to help make them, and mini waffles are small enough to feed little appetites without a lot of waste. However, if you are making them for those with large appetites, you might need more than one waffle maker!

Homemade Syrup

Use any syrup you like on these pancakes. But I have included a recipe for a buttery, brown sugar syrup that is the same one I use on Croissant Bread Pudding. It is so buttery and delicious that you won’t need to add butter to these waffles. It is made with butter, brown sugar, and buttermilk–yes, buttermilk! If you worry that it might not be the taste you want in syrup, don’t worry. This syrup doesn’t have a buttermilk tang. It is buttery and delicious from the added brown sugar.

The syrup only takes a few minutes to cook. Once the sugar melts, add baking soda, which will foam and rise in the pan. But be careful because it can splatter too! The baking soda adds air to the syrup, so spoon it immediately over hot waffles.

Use a Cookie Cutter To Make Star-Shaped Waffles

Even if you do not have a star-shaped waffle maker, you can still make waffle stars. Just use a traditional waffle maker instead. Use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out a star shape from the middle of the cooked waffle. Then serve the leftover waffle with the cutout too. Fill the cutout hole with fruit, pecans, and whipped cream. Be sure to drizzle a little brown sugar syrup on top too! Enjoy!

Instructions
Waffles
  1. Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder, soda, salt, and malted milk powder into a medium bowl.
  2. In another bowl, whisk the egg, vanilla, and buttermilk together. Stir in the butter and mix well.
  3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir until incorporated. Do not overmix. If the batter is too thick, add a little more buttermilk.
  4. Heat the waffle maker until hot. Then grease it with cooking spray. Pour about 1 1/2 tablespoons of batter into the maker, spreading it out to the edges of the star. Close the lid and cook for about a minute. Then open it to see if the waffle is brown. If it is not brown, cook it for a few more seconds. If it is brown, use a silicone cooking utensil to remove it.
Brown Sugar Syrup
  1. Melt butter in a medium-sized saucepan. Add the brown sugar, buttermilk, and salt. Bring to a boil and stir for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Remove the pan from the heat and add the vanilla and baking soda. Stir. The mixture will foam from the baking soda.
  3. Pour the syrup over the waffles. Garnish with fruit and serve immediately.

Substitutions

Make star waffles with a cookie cutter. Even if you do not have a star-shaped waffle maker, you can still make star waffles using a regular round waffle maker. When the waffle is cooked, use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out a waffle star from the middle. Then use the leftover waffle too. Fill the hole with fruit and whipped cream to give it a festive look.

Yield

This recipe makes 8-10 waffles.
