Also, alphonso mangoes are back in season and I must say I am so happy – this is officially my first mango recipe of the season. It is a recipe you can make in under 5 minutes but I would recommend storing it for a couple of hours for the flavor to develop further. Before we can get into the recipe let us understand a few commonly asked questions about the drink.

What is mango lassi?

Mango lassi is a popular Indian drink that is made with mangoes, yogurt, milk, sugar/sweetener, cardamom, saffron and salt. Sometimes some recipes use water to thin it down to the right consistency. Also many lassi recipes include rose water and a little lime juice as well. It is a drink served cold, perfect for the hotter months ahead.

What is mango lassi made of?

This mango lassi recipe requires mangoes, yogurt, milk, cardamom, honey and salt. I haven’t used saffron or any other flavorings here as they are optional. I also garnished it with pistachios.

Is mango lassi healthy?

I added honey into this lassi to keep it refined sugar free, you can use any sweetener of your choice. Same goes with the yogurt and milk, making this recipe relatively healthy. If you use greek yogurt the protein in the drink does increase making it even more wholesome. I would say it is healthy to drink and hence makes it perfect for a quick breakfast recipe on the go.

What is the difference between lassi and mango lassi?

Lassi is a yogurt based drink which can be served sweet or savory. This recipe is sweet but also it is a mango based lassi that is not the original plane flavor. The original lassi is flavored with cardamom, sugar and salt while the savory lassi is seasoned with salt, chaat masala, and black pepper. There are many flavors of lassi, saffron lassi and pistachio lassi are such examples.

Lassi is basically a yogurt based drink. There is no exact translation but it is understood as a yogurt drink. Many bloggers refer to it as an Indian yogurt smoothie as well.

Lassi comes from India, the region of Punjab. As the northern part of India gets extremely hot during the summer, drinks like these come handy to make and are cooling for the scorching heat. However it is very popular and found around many street vendors across India.

To make this lassi I have used alphonso mangoes, yogurt, milk, honey, salt, cardamom. I also used a little water to adjust the consistency. You can use a little saffron as well, bloom it in cold/hot milk before adding it into the blender. Serve it with crushed pistachios but also garnished it with tajin because I love tajin with lassi.

To make this lassi we need a blender. I have served the lassi in glasses but you can serve it in earthen cups as well.

How to make mango lassi?

We add the mango, yogurt, milk, cardamom, salt into a blender and blend until smooth. Adjust the consistency with water if needed. To rim the glasses, dip the rim in water and then into the tajin, once it is evenly rimmed pour the lassi into the glass and garnish with crushed pistachios. Serve it chilled.

Serving & storing mango lassi?

I prefer storing this lassi in the fridge for 1-2 hours for the flavors to combine well but this is not mandatory. It must be served chilled though. I like pistachios with this mango lassi but it is is also yummy with cashew nuts or almonds. Once this is made the drink can be stored in an a air tight glass for up to 4 days in the fridge.
